EU Whistleblowing Directive (2019/1937)

What is the EU Whistleblowing Directive?

The European Parliament passed a directive in October of 2019, to be implemented by December 2021 which compels all 27 EU members states to incorporate changes to their national legislation to raise the minimum level of legal protection for whistleblowers.

Whistleblowers play a vital role

The justification for doing so is that whistleblowers play a vital role in exposing and combatting bribery and corruption which distorts competition, increase costs of doing business, undermine the interests of investors and shareholders and, in general, lower the attractiveness for investment and create an uneven playing field for all businesses across the union, thus affecting the proper functioning of the internal market.

More than 50 Employees

Under this directive all legal entities which employ more than 50 people are compelled to establish effective internal reporting mechanisms. In the absence of effective internal reporting channels people are able report their concerns externally and benefit from the protections provided by the directive.
